Corona Lake's catfish bite just keeps getting better with limits the rule for anglers fishing the mid-lake spots from a boat. The bite is nearly as good for shore anglers at the dam and the whole west shoreline. Most of the fish are running from 1 1/2 to three pounds, but there has been a steady parade of eight to 10-pound fish again this past week.
Reggie Cauley and Dalton Palacios, both Carson, had a 13-catfish stringer that was topped off with a 10-pound cat. A seven-pound fish was landed by Hoang Mai, Corona, fly-lining mackerel from a boat, and another seven-pounder was caught by Kevin Whitehurst, Inglewood. Pedro Galvan, East Los Angeles, had a 6 3/4-pound catfish, Jack Madril, Riverside, landed a 5-pound, 14-ounce fish.
One of the top stringers was posted by Josh Perry, San Diego, who landed 11 catfish for 28 1/2 pounds and his best cat was a five pounder, all fishing nightcrawlers at the dam. Frank Carrillo, Phillips Ranch, landed five cats for 15 pounds, including a five-pounds, fishing mackerel from the dam shoreline.
In addition to the twice-weekly plants of catfish going into Corona Lake, tilapia are also added once a week, and the panfish are starting to show in pretty fair numbers for anglers tossing nightcrawler pieces for them. Brandon Ray, Corona, landed a 1 1/4-pounder off the west shoreline.
Corona Lake is also hosting five Biggest Catfish Derbies every weekend. Entry fee is $5 for any of the five permit time frames -- from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday evening, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, and from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday evening. (There will be no derbies for the mid-day special at noon or the 24-hour fishing pass holders. All of the derbies feature a 100 percent payout of the whole pot to the angler catching the biggest catfish. If 20 anglers enter at $5 each, the biggest catfish caught among those 20 anglers wins that angler the whole $100 pot.
