Huge plants of both blue catfish and channel cats went into Corona Lake just before the big holiday weekend, and the fishing has been very good since. There continues to be a good number of trout caught, too.

The best blue cat landed was a nice 12 1/2-pounder caught by Wayland Marzett, Los Angeles, fishing shrimp in the dam area. Santiago Palacios, West Covina, landed eight catfish for 21 pounds, and his top fish was a five-pounder. All were caught on mackerel from a boat.

The cats are showing on a wide variety of cut baits and the marshmallow-meal worm combo. Adding a scent or dip bait has also been a good idea. The fish are mostly in less than 10 feet of water.

The top rainbow recorded was an 8 1/2-pounder caught by Frank Mares, Fontana, on a nightcrawler off JD's Point. The trout are mostly in deep water at the dam and through the main body of the lake, with some fish up cruising on top early in the day. Adrian Sandoval, Moreno Valley, caught a 22 1/2-pound sturgeon fishing T&S mackerel.
