Heavy weekly trout plants continue to translate into heavy stringers of nice two-pound average rainbow trout, and a few better quality fish are caught each week.
An 8 ?-pound rainbow landed by Jesse Torres, Ontario, was the top trout reported this week. He was using hatchery formula PowerBait from the shore to catch his trophy.
Just some of the nice stringers reported included a five-fish, 13 ?-pound catch made by Roger Martinez, Covina, on rainbow floating bait. His best fish was a 3 ?-pounder. Bob Clark and Jacques Million, both Murrieta, had 10 rainbows for 20 pounds with a three pounder on the top. They were fishing nightcrawlers from a boat. Conrad Mallada, Mark Simson, and Jake Anderson, all from Lake Elsinore, landed 12 rainbows for 24 pounds, while Jamie Stoneburner and Dave Sawdey, both Desert Hot Springs, had 10 rainbows for 10 pounds, topped off by a 3 ?-pounder.
Anglers are mostly using a variety of floating dough baits in bright colors, with the garlic and hatchery pellet flavors top bets. Small jigs and trout plastics have also been good. Adding a garlic scent to the baits or lures had been a good idea.
In addition to the trout, there few anglers targeting the catfish are getting quite a few fish. Bill White, Norco, had five catfish for a total of 18 pounds, including one at 5 ?-pounds, fishing nightcrawlers at the dam. Doug Beerd and Dylan Escobdo, Garden Grove, landed a 14-pound sturgeon.
