Corona Lake seeing hot action on Tailwalkers, browns, and sturgeon

Trophy Nebraska Tailwalkers to 15 pounds and brown trout to five pounds were planted last week in Corona Lake and the bonus plants led to an exceptional week of fishing at this western Riverside County water. Sturgeon also continue to surprise and delight the trout anglers.

The biggest Tailwalker reported at the tackle shop was a 10 1/2-pounder landed as part of a six-fish, 19 1/2-pound stringer landed by Tom Dunlap, Hemet, and Chad Streelmon, Corona. The pair was fishing chartreuse floating bait at the dam. Tom Walker, Temecula, landed a 9 1/2-pound Tailwalker to top off his fish-fish limit, while Brittney and Jack Davis, Ontario, had 10 rainbows that weighed 16 1/2 pounds, including a nine-pound Tailwalker.

Pat Worley and Chris Marino, both Moreno Valley, had nine trout fishing Panther Martins and Kastmasters near the dam from shore. The stringer weighed 33 pounds and included eight browns averaging about three pounds each and a 7 1/2-pound Tailwalker.

Anglers tossing lures have been getting more browns than rainbows, while the floating bait and nightcrawler fishermen are getting few browns but a lot of the rainbows. The bait guys are also scoring on a few surprise sturgeon. Robert Campos, Corona, landed a 13 1/2-pounder fishing green floating bait and four-pound test. Paul Farris, Chino Hills, caught a 13-pound sturgeon on a nightcrawler, while Sam Aguilar, Whittier, had a 10-pounder on a nightcrawler.

Water temperatures permitting, Corona will get another load of trophy Tailwalkers in two weeks, and rainbows are being planted again this week to keep the action hot.

Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors pay only $20, with a special $17 pass sold on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The 24-hour passes are sold the Friday and Saturday nearest the full moon each month. They cost just $60, and anglers can bring a spouse and up to three kids to help fill the 24-hour pass 15-fish limit.
