Corona Lake trout action continues wide open after a trio of trout plants last week

The trout bite was simply off the hook at Corona Lake this past week thanks to three separate rainbow trout plants -- two on Wednesday and one on Friday. "The fishing was the best I've seen in the last two months -- and it's been pretty good for all of the last two months," said Chris Elliott at Corona. There were over 50 limits of trout reported at the bait shop, and the week's largest rainbow was a hulking 18 1/2-pounder caught by Dave Durniok of Buena Park while fishing near the fence at the dam from shore with rainbow floating bait.

In addition to the rainbows, a lot of browns and quite a few sturgeon are showing up from the previous week's plants. In fact, it was a catch of 10 browns by Gus Cisneros, Corona, that earned the week's top stringer. The 10 fish weighed in at 27 1/2 pounds, and the big fish was a five pounder. All were taken on trout plastics fishing from a boat.

Lupe and Jamie dela Torre, Corona, had 10 rainbows that weighed in at 19 1/2 pounds and all were taken on green floating bait from shore, and the catch included a 6 1/2-pound rainbow. Michael and Jessica Muller and Wes Werner, all Murrieta, had 10 rainbows that weighed 18 pounds and the big fish was a six-pounder. Jaime Rivas, Pomona, caught five rainbows, including a 5 3/4-pounder, for an 11 3/4-pound stringer on chartreuse floating bait, while Jose Navarro, Riverside, also had a five-fish catch that weighed 10 pounds and included a 5 1/2-pound rainbow. Another 5 1/2-pound rainbow was landed by Chad Streelman, Corona.

The hot spots for the rainbows have been down by the dam at the fence or around flooded timber. Most boat and float tube anglers have been hanging around the stocking tube 50 yards off the shoreline.

While most anglers continue to fish for trout, David Sandoval and Jim Turner, both Ontario, teamed up to landed a 30-pound sturgeon on Eagle Claw chartreuse floating bait with garlic. Oliver Valdez, Corona, landed five crappie to 1 1/2-pounds fishing jigs from a boat this past week.

Anglers should continue to report all their catches at the tackle shop and have photos taken for Fishing Web Cam. All limits reported and all trout over five pounds are worth a free, one-year subscription to Western Outdoor News. Existing subscribers can get half off on a one-year renewal.

Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors pay only $20, with a special $17 pass sold on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The 24-hour passes are sold the Friday and Saturday nearest the full moon each month. They cost just $60, and anglers can bring a spouse and up to three kids to help fill the 24-hour pass 15-fish limit.
