Limit-style trout fishing and a shot at a huge rainbow have been the benchmarks of the action at Corona Lake over the past week. Two more of the monster rainbows from the Thanksgiving weekend plant were landed again this past week, and the tackle shop staff is having a hard time keeping taps on all the nice stringers coming in.
The big fish was a 20-pound, nine-ounce rainbow caught on Sunday by Terry Hartog, Menifee, on salmon eggs at the dam, while the other big fish was a 19-pounder landed by Shelby Howell, Wildomar. SEE PHOTOS Top trout baits have been chartreuse, corn yellow, and rainbow Eagle Claw Nitro Bait dough dipped in garlic Nitro Garvy. Inflated nightcrawlers doused with the garlic scent have also been good. The key for both the nightcrawlers and the floating baits has been to use leaders no more than a foot long to keep the bait near the bottom where the fish are cruising. Small trout jigs and trout plastics are also working well.
There were at least 33 limits of rainbows were reported by anglers, and this Wednesday's trout plant of Nebraska Tailwalkers should keep the action hot. Photos of these catches are being uploaded daily to Corona Lake's website so anglers can keep tabs on the fishing. In addition, anglers who catch fish and report them to the tackle shop and have photos taken are eligible for a weekly drawing for a package worth $300, including lake passes, pontoon boat rentals, and fishing gear.
A couple of typical limits include the five-fish, 14-pound limit caught by Wes Wright, Fullerton, tossing orange plastics from his float tube. Miguel Montez, Riverside, caught five at 10 1/2 pounds, including a 3 1/2-pounder. George Padilla, Pomona, also had a 12-pound, five-fish limit with his best also a 3 1/2-pound rainbow.
While no sturgeon were reported this past week, they have become a staple during the trout bite with fish from five to eight pounds being landed pretty regularly. Catfish also still continue to be caught and one angler -- who was supposed to be at work -- landing fish at 20 1/2 and 23 pounds.
Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors pay only $20, with a special $17 pass sold on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The 24-hour passes are sold the Friday and Saturday nearest the full moon each month, and the next dates are Jan. 1 and 2. They cost just $60, and anglers can bring a spouse and up to three kids to help fill the 24-hour pass 15-fish limit.
