A very important reminder for anglers with pets. California State Parks urges dog owners to keep dogs away from raw fish at Silverwood Lake due to the risk of Salmon Poisoning Disease. The disease can be deadly for dogs that eat certain types of raw or cold-smoked freshwater fish infected with a bacteria-like organism. The parasite does not affect people or other pets, and properly cooked fish is safe.
Symptoms of Salmon Poisoning Disease
• Fever
• Vomiting and diarrhea
• Loss of appetite and weight loss
• Lethargy
If your dog has recently eaten raw fish and shows any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately. Without treatment, Salmon Poisoning Disease is often deadly within two weeks.
How to Keep Dogs Safe
• Keep Dogs on leash and away from water and fishing areas
• Do not allow them to eat raw salmon, steelhead, trout and other freshwater fish
• Properly dispose of fish waste
