The lake fell to 30 percent of capacity, and water temperatures remained near 81 degrees. Falling water levels haven’t hurt the bite at Castaic. In fact, it may well be the most consistent fishing spot in our local area. Bass anglers continued their one two punch using topwater early followed by finesse baits. Small poppers and walking baits near rocky shorelines have been a consistent producer before 9am. After that anglers have been switching to their favorite finesse tactic for solid fishing throughout the day. Green Pumpkin, Ox Blood, Hologram Shad, and purple colors are always good choices at Castaic. The bass have been holding along bluff walls and main lake points from 5 to 25 feet deep. Striper anglers filled their stringers with 10’ striper which seem to be everywhere. Topwater, Kastmasters, and trolled flies are all working for bites, but the bait anglers are also getting in on the action using cut sardines in 25 to 50 feet of water. A more recent tactic has been to use flutter spoons and magnum flutter spoons for both largemouth and striper. Catfishing has been decent for anglers fishing cut baits, dip bait, and chicken liver in deeper coves around the lake.
