Two trout at 18 pounds, another at 18 1/2, and a 19-pound rainbow were caught at Corona Lake over the past week. These were the four biggest trout caught in the southern half of the state so far this year, just behind the 20 1/2 pounder caught the previous week by Stan Santos.
Greg Loper of Corona landed the 19-pound Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbow fishing cheese at the dam, while the 18 1/2-pounder was caught by Gary Hoofer, Westminster, on chartreuse Nitro Bait from a boat. Kelly McGregor, Norco, was fishing a worm to land one of the 18-pounders, and Tim Cerny, Riverside, landed the other 18-pound rainbow on orange Nitro Bait.
One of the week's best stringers was a six-fish catch made by Adam and Matt Albert of Temecula that weighed in at 28 1/2 pounds and included an 11 1/2-pound rainbow. Santiago Palacios, West Covina, had a five-fish stringer that weighed 24 pounds, including a seven-pounder. Christian Djurasebic, Huntington Beach, caught nine rainbows on jigs that weighed in at 29 pounds and his big fish was also a seven-pounder.
Corona Lake is now full and water is running over the spillway.
Trout plants are weekly at Corona Lake, with Mt. Lassen Trout Farms' rainbows scheduled for this week and the Nebraska Tailwalkers going in next week. This week's plant will include more of those huge rainbows into the teens and 20-pound class.
Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors only pay $20, with a special $17 pass sold on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The once-monthly 24-hour passes remain just $60 with the next 24-hour fishing coming up Martin Luther King weekend Jan. 16-18 -- three nights of all-night fishing thanks to the Monday holiday. These passes have a 15-fish limit. For more Corona Lake fishing information, call 951-277-4489 or log on at www.fishinglakes.com .
