Corona Lake still good for trout;?Įbreaking open for catfish, bluegill
While the trout bite continues to pace the fishing action at Corona Lake, the catfish and bluegill are really turning on with the warm weather. Steelhead were planted last week, and they will also go in again this week -- along with another load of trophy rainbows -- and the steelhead are averaging about three pounds.
??"These are pink-meated fish which are great eating," said David Horn, lake manager.??
Top trout reported was a 16-pound rainbow landed by Justin Pack, Hemet, while fishing chartreuse Nitro Bait from a boat. A 12-pounder was landed by LeRoy Chacon, Fontana, while Rick Palmer, Oregon City, Ore., landed a limit of five fish that weighed in at 17 pounds, including a 10 3/4-pound rainbow.??
"Short leaders are the real trick for the trout right now," said Horn. He recommended anglers keep the leaders to six inches so the bottom-hugging rainbows can easily find the floating baits and inflated nightcrawlers. Chartreuse Nitro Bait with corn-flavored Nitro Gravy has been the hot bait, but inflated nightcrawlers with scent are also getting a few fish.??
The catfish have been in the flooded trees and lily pads the best action has been on cut mackerel for both shore and boat anglers. Horn took a busman's holiday and caught a 13 1/4-pound catfish in the lily pads. ?ĮThe bluegill are moving shallow and have been showing on flooded brush in five to 10 feet of water, mostly on wax worms. Also a few crappie showing in these same brushy areas.
Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these $20 passes has a five-fish limit. The lake's 24-hour passes are available one weekend a month, usually on the Friday and Saturday night nearest the full moon. The next 24-hour fishing will be March 30-31. These passes have a 15-fish limit and cost $45.
