A cold snap moved into the area on Sunday & Monday bringing very cool evening temperatures down into the high 20's at Parchers. As expected, the fish responded well to the fall weather and started biting like crazy. To make things even better, on Monday South Lake was planted with Alpers for the first annual Bishop Creek Canyon Fall Classic and then Tuesday the DFG dropped in the largest plant of fish since July. Things are really looking good for the fall bite.
Trolling is still producing a lot of fish but the shallow water bite near the inlets has really improved. Power Worms, Lip Ripperz and Mini-Jigs are responsible for most of the trophy fish but solid stringers of fish to 4lbs were also caught using Chartruese Powerbait and Nightcrawlers. Chartruese and Natural are the hot colors. Fly anglers are doing excellent as well on black or olive wooly buggers.
The lake level is continuing to drop and we've lost about 6ft since mid August. Boats up to 14ft are still clear to launch as of 9/6/08 but we're expecting the Forest Service to close the launch ramp within a week at the most.
