Report: The end of another wonderful weekend fishing the Channel Islands is complete. Today our captains reported the water has already started to recover from our windy week. Water temperatures just yesterday were in the low to mid 60’s, but today they jumped up to the high 60’s. With the increase in temperature, the Yellowtail and Bonito came out to play. We lost a whole bunch of fish to Sea Lions and to “break-offs”. Most of the Yellows are still on the small side, averaging 10 pounds but we did have several today in the high 20’s and a few in the low 30’s. Obviously, it’s safe to say the ones that we lost due to “break-offs” were the larger models. The nice thing about the way we are fishing Yellowtail right now is that there is something for everyone. We are anchored in the shallows with kelp off the stern. Those looking to catch Yellowtail, Bonito and Calico Bass are fishing the back of the boat fly-lining live bait or casting lures into the current. Those that want to load up on bottom fish can fish forward of the house all the way to the bow, and drop a 4oz dropper loop rig down and catch Whitefish and Sheephead all day long. Keeps everyone happy and is a very productive way to catch multiple species at the same time.

Today’s Fish Count: 8 Boats and 194 Anglers

50 Yellowtail, 2 Halibut, 54 Bonito, 21 Calico Bass, 6 Sheephead, 19 Lingcod, 310 Whitefish, and 1,010 Rockfish.
