On the last day of July we had 7 boats go out in search of mostly top water species like Barracuda, Yellowtail and Calico Bass. Fishing as of late has been great for bass in the kelp but today we had to really work for our catch. Some boats had good success while others struggled to catch a legal sized Calico. Up till now we had no trouble catching legal bass. In fact, this season we have seen more big bass than any year in recent memory. But today we were humbled and shown why we call if “fishing” and not “catching”. There was a few bigger game fish caught while targeting the Calico. Still not seeing the giant Yellows everyone got spoiled on last season, but still respectable fish being brought aboard. Sea Lions are causing a lot of frustration, and we are losing fish daily to these hungry pinnipeds. Still, it was reported to be a nice day on the water. The weather was beautiful at the islands are always a pleasure to fish! Today’s Fish Count: 7 Boats and 164 Anglers. 19 Yellowtail, 91 Barracuda, 2 Halibut, 33 Calico Bass, 1 White Seabass, 1 Fantail Sole, 20 Sheephead, 6 Sculpin, 422 Ocean Whitefish, 15 Lingcod, and 444 Rockfish.
