Big rainbows are still the story at Corona Lake

It was another week of good fishing at Corona Lake with lots of rainbows over the 10-pound mark, and the new, colorful Sierra rainbows are showing in good numbers.

The overall bite on trout is still very good, with the best action for boat anglers. Due to warmer water temperatures the trout are staying in the deep water. Dough baits and nightcrawlers have both been working well.

Top fish this week was a 13-pound rainbow caught by Eric Carrillo, Rancho Cucamonga, on orange Power Bait at the dam. Carrillo also landed a 10-8. Two other anglers matched Carrillo's 10-8 catch this past week. Gary Williams, Beaumont, and Juan Salazar, Whittier, each caught 10-8 rainbows of their own. Bobby Bennett, Compton, caught a 12-8 rainbow on a meal worm at the dam. Frank Patella, Alta Loma, landed an 11-8 trout on chartreuse at the dam.

More and more catfish are being reported each week with the majority being caught on mackerel and shrimp. There also continue to be some panfish -- bluegill and crappie -- and bass caught each week.

Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these $20 passes has a five-fish limit. The popular 24-hour fishing passes are offered on Friday and Saturday nights on the weekend nearest the full moon. These passes have a 15-fish limit and cost $60. The family special, where mom and up to three kids 12 or under can help dad catch his limit, will apply on these all-night passes.
