Bass: The bass bite just keeps getting better at DVL. The east dam, Rawson cove, the south west corner and shallows exhibiting flat rocky spots conducive for spawn have been loaded with 2- 4 pound largemouth. Most reports have fish holding between 5 and 20 feet, the bigger fish being in deeper water. Drop-shotting purple or green worms, Carolina rigged brush hogs, watermelon or green pumpkin Senkos, flukes, and tube jigs were all reported as effective for bass. Shore anglers found swimbaits to be the key to getting largemouth with reports of 5- 11 pound catches. Shawn Cooley and Jeff van Nimweson of Quail valley had a 25 fish day with their biggest five totaling 20.15 pounds fishing with coolbaits in 5-20 feet of water in various spots around the lake. Ande Walker of Burbank got a 6.5 pound bass fishing a jig and worm combo. Tim Partee of Burbank also got a 6.5 pound bass using the same method.
Trout: Shore fisherman and boaters have been slaying the trout with a variety of methods. This is a perfect time for novice anglers to sharpen their skills. Reports have trout ranging from the surface down to 40 feet. The marina, the east dam, restroom 1, restroom two, and the west dam, have all been holding trout. Shore anglers have been relying on Powerbait, trout worms, mini jigs, and Kastmasters. Boaters found it is best to drift fish with night crawlers in the morning. Then when the sun gets high or the wind picks up troll a jointed Rapala or nightcrawler on the surface. The use of lead core and Down riggers have helped get those deeper running fish. Dominic Donchig of Covina got a 7.82 pound trout fishing the shore with mealworms. Doug Caldwell of Upland got a4.25 pound trout fishing with nightcrawlers on the north shore.
Striper: There were no striper reports this week Trout swim baits, Plugs or large topwater baits were the most reported lures for striper. Fishing points near the marina or on the inlet remain proven spots for boaters.
Catfish: There was a solid catfish bite this week. Great spots for catfish are the third cove of shoreline fishing, and near the east dam or wave attenuator. The most effective baits included anchovies, mackerel, and raw shrimp. Most catfish have been found on the bottom in 10-20 feet down. Sheldon Johnson of Hemet got a 8.03 pound catfish on the east dam fishing with nightcrawlers.
Panfish: There were few panfish reports this week, but most anglers have the best luck fishing along the dams, specifically near the stairways. Anglers have found that fishing 20 -30 feet off the dams using live worm dropped to 25 feet has been a consistent method.
