Cooler weather turns Irvine Lake trout bite back on for fish to 10-8, Masters Tournament taken by 5-14 rainbow

"The temperatures have dropped back down at least 20 degrees from the hot and windy conditions we had over the weekend", observed Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. "The return of weather in the 70's means the good fishing has turned back on. We put in a beautiful batch of trout for our ???Masters Tournament', and most of them remain to be caught."

The first-ever Masters Tournament was won by Robert Avemaria of Placentia, who garnered top honors with a 5-14 trout. Avemaria took home $1000 in cash, a custom "Masters" jacket, a custom Phenix rod and a one-year VIP pass to the lake.

Last week's larger fish gave way to mostly mid-size 1 to 5 pounders, with decent quantities of 6 to 8-pound trout. Top producers were Gulp! Trout Dough, Power Mouse and Power Bug combinations.

The water level is holding steady, with and 18-inch leader favored for bait dunkers. Top color choice for Power Mouse and other applications was chartreuse or pink.

Bass fishing is pretty good, with a lot of fish up on beds. Most legitimate sight-fishing techniques are working well, with dropshot-rigged lizards and tubes being singled out for largemouth in the 2 to 3 pound range. Local experts feel that the next full moon will see the largest females moving into the spotlight.

Crappie anglers are finding very good numbers of slabs to 2 pounds on Atomic Teasers and 2-inch Gulp! Minnows in white or chartreuse back in the flats and Sierra Cove. Many of the largest crappie are gravid females, and anglers are reminded that these spawners should be gently released.

Catfish to 5 pounds are getting active for anglers targeting them with mackerel, or on nightcrawlers intended for trout. The Kids Lagoon is kicking out very good numbers of trout to families with children age 12 and under, with a mealworm under a bobber the hot ticket.

Outstanding catches of the week at Irvine Lake included;
Gary Woods of Anaheim, 10-8 trout on a Roostertail at Rocky Point
Josh Griffin of San Pedro, 8-12 trout on Power Bait at the flats
Kelly Tom of West Covina, 7-10 trout on a mini jig at boat dock cove
John Chapman of Yorba Linda, 7-6 trout
Lauren Corona of Fullerton, 7-2 trout on Power Bait at Trout Island
James Anna of Trabuco Canyon, 7-0 trout on Power Bait at boat dock cove
Tom Collins of Santa Ana, 5-8, 5-4 and 4-8 trout on Power Bait at the west shore
Tony Diaz of Los Angeles, 5-trout limit totaling 20-2 on a Power Worm at the west shore
Elaine Dickerhoof of Artesia, 5-crappie limit totaling 10-12 on a mini jig at the flats
