The plan was to open up some Rockfish for the Rockfish opener and that's exactly what we did. Twenty-five anglers hopped on board the beautiful Ranger 85 out of Channel Islands Sportfishing for a 2-day trip with Captain Frank Ursitti and Crew. The weekend forecast didn't look as nice as we'd like, but that wasn't going to stop us from loading up with some quality Rockfish.
We carved right through the snotty conditions as we made our way over to San Miguel Island. We were greeted with high seas and gusty winds but we were all on deck and determined to make a few nice drifts for the opening day of ground fishing. The weather conditions continued to build so after a steady pick we made our way over to Santa Rosa for some Halibut drifts. There were a couple short bites but no takers. We anchored up in calm waters and watched a beautiful sunset over Santa Rosa followed by a great dinner.
On day two we fished the west end of Santa Cruz Island. The North East wind picked up and flattend out the seas and we were able to enjoy a nice day out on the water. We quickly made our redemption for day one's tough fishing conditions. We hit our limits of nice grade Reds, Blues, Chuckleheads, as well as some grumpy Whitefish. The Lingcod were out in full force, however we made arrangements to meet in April! Captain Frank and his Crew put together another memorable trip aboard the Ranger 85. As usual a great time was had by all of the anglers. There's plenty more 2-day and overnight trips they'll be running out of Channel Islands Harbor before they head down to H&M Landing. Give them a call at 805-382-1612 for information and reservations.
