A free trout fishing seminar will be conducted at 8:00 AM on January 26 at Irvine Lake. Instructor will be legendary trout expert Marlon Meade, along with the Irvine Lake Pro team. Instruction will cover jigs, trolling and bait fishing. The seminar is free with paid admission; reservations can be made online at [email protected] or by phone at 714-649-9111.

Sunday's blustery Santa Ana winds were a distant memory by mid-week, reported general manager Dave Noyes. "The bite slowed down a little during the Santa Anas on Sunday", observed Noyes. "Since it cooled off again, the fishing has been excellent."

Good numbers of fish were seen at the west shore, Trout Island and Santiago Flats. Gulp!, Power Bait, nightcrawlers and various constructions of the Power Mouse all produced for bait dunkers, with the favored leader length being a fairly short 6 to 12 inhces. Trollers did best with firetiger-color CD03 and CD05 Rapalas.

The majority of the trout were ranging from 2 to 6 pounds, with 7 to 10 pounders regularly spicing up the stringers. A few secretive bass specialists kept information close to the vest, while some 2 to 5-pound catfish were caught by trout anglers using nightcrawlers. The west shore shuttle service has been discontinued.

Outstanding catches of the week at Irvine Lake included:
Honesty Medina of Norwalk, 10.14 pound trout on a Power Worm at Trout Island
Varian Virgen of Buena Park, 9.1 pound trout on Nitro near the docks
Ron Mann of Capistrano, 8.8 pound trout on Power Bait at the west shore
Ramiro Ramirez of Anaheim, 8.6 pound trout on Gulp! at the flats
Noah Sheets of Cypress, 8.4 pound trout on Power Bait at Trout Island
Sue Burns of Huntington Beach, 8.3 pound trout on a Power Mouse at the flats
Adrian Pintor of Los Angeles, 7.14 pound trout on mini jigs at the south side
Andrew Rincon of Mission Viejo, 7.12 pound trout on a Power Mouse at the flats
Hubert Zamara of Long Beach, 7.12 pound trout on a Power Mouse at the west shore

Besides traditional hook-and-line fishing, A California fishing license is required to take any kind of fish, mollusk, crustacean, invertebrate, amphibian or reptile. That means if you are trapping crawdads in a slough, or even just catching lizards in a vacant lot, you...... Read More
