Saturday’s trips started off with a little bit of rain in the morning. It stopped by the middle of the morning but the overcast skies never hung around the entire day. The fish were not detoured by a little wet weather. Bottom fish like Red Snapper and other Rockfish species made up the bulk of our catch but there was some game fish caught. The full day and overnight boats have been consistently catching both White Seabass and Yellowtail early in the morning. Sometimes they bite in the afternoon as well so our boats will often return to the spot they started the day in hopes of an afternoon bite. All in all, it was a successful day as our anglers came home with lots of great fish! This afternoon, a couple of our local boat captains said they watched schools of White Seabass and Yellowtail on the meter. These fish were moving fast and uncooperative. Some bites and a hand full of fish caught but they were not very interested in a hooked bait or jig. Often when this happens we have to resort to a run and gun style of fishing. This is when all the anglers are at the rail waiting for the captains signal to drop their lines on a school of fish. At the outer islands it was a different story. Squid is starting to pop up in a few key locations and boats are anchoring in areas they see both bait and fish congregating. Fishing a single dropper loop presented 3 to 5 feet off the bottom waiting for fish to come through the area. We catch Halibut, White Seabass and Yellowtail more often than not with this technique. Today’s Fish Count: 11 boats and 236 anglers 22 Yellowtail, 1 Halibut, 1 White Seabass, 17 Bonito, 1 Barracuda, 5 Calico Bass, 82 Lingcod, 4 Sheephead, 2 Sculpin, 22 Ocean Whitefish and 1,992 Assorted Rockfish.
