Weather was all over the place this week but those out on the water faired well on rainbows and also some browns to 16 inches. The number of browns caught & released or found on stringers is on the rise the past week, a good sign that the spawn is approaching. Inflated or fly-lined nightcrawlers fished in the channel by the island seems to be doing the most damage on the browns. Best bait for the rainbows is the Berkley Gulp dough in orange. The plastic bite, namely on white mini-jigs tipped with a piece of worm or red, orange or pink powerworms, is still strong and is the best way to hook up on an Alper. The water level at the lake is still dropping although it has slowed down considerably. The back of the lake is now very shallow and actually froze over on Friday night when temps dipped into the low teens, quite a surprise for the first weekend in October. Thankfully an Indian Summer is forecasted for the upcoming week with temps into the 50's during the day and in the 30's at night so if the fish respond the way they did after the last cold front came through, the upcoming week should bring exceptional fishing. The boat landing at South Lake will be operating at least another two weeks, possibly till the end of the month if the weather holds up.

Bishop CreekSnow and wind kept many canyon visitors in their cabins or tents but those who spent time on the creek were rewarded with a solid bite on rainbows using red salmon eggs, yellow panther martins or mealworms. The South Fork is due for an Alpers plant this coming week, always good news for local anglers....... Read More
