Afternoon thunderstorms were the norm this past week but thankfully the wind stayed down so anglers didn't have any trouble getting on the water. The rain would come in the mid afternoon and usually clear out by 7pm or so allowing for great conditions. The cooler afternoons brought the fish shallower this week but trolling with lead core is still the hottest bite on South Lake. Folks are scoring good numbers of pan sized browns and rainbows on frog pattern needlefish, red & gold Thomas Bouyants, Flashers and nightcrawlers. The fish are more spread out than last week and can be caught anywhere from three to eight colors. Fishing at the inlets is still a bit erratic but nightcrawlers, rainbow Powerbait or natural Powerworms are your best bet when that bite is on. The larger browns are being taken on nightcrawlers and gold Kastmasters trolled or fished from shore. On Monday July 30th South Lake received the biggest stocking of browns this year with 150lbs of Browns to 2lbs getting planted along with some of the always popular Alpers rainbows. Along with another DFG plant, this should be great week to be fishing South Lake.
