I was able to fish on the Pursuit with Captain John Woodrum and crew for the March 1st Rockfish opener. We left 22nd Street Landing at 6am sharp for the 20 plus mile journey across the channel to Catalina Island. March first marks the opening of a much greater variety of species to target and fill the bags with including rockfish, sheephead and whitefish. The Captain informed us that a little surface action would be the plan when we first reached the island. The bonita didn't dissapoint!! Chrome jigs or a flylined sardined tossed away from the boat produced an almost instant hookup on 2-6 lb hard fighting bonita. We put over 100 on the boat before heading to deeper water to give the rockfishing a try. We anchored on a few deep rocks and put a number of nice salmon grouper, reds and chuckles in the sacks before heading back in to shallower water. We ended the day with a nice mixed bag of fish including Robert Sosa's big salmon grouper that took jackpot honors for the day. The weather was awesome, the fishing was great and happy times were experienced by all aboard. The Pursuit leaves 22nd Street Landing at 6 am daily. Captain Woodrum fishes Catalina Island more than anyone and his experienced crew provided top notch service. Give the landing a call at 1-310-832-8304 od check their website at 22nd Street Landing for a full schedule.
